Although J. S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio is probably one of his most popular creations, it is astonishingly rarely considered in music theory literature. On closer inspection, however, it is a complex and highly rigorously composed work with a highly logical disposition.
With the help of various mathematical methods, this work attempts to recreate the development of a hypothetical construction process in order to simultaneously explore new ways for music analyses to penetrate a substantial composition.
Historical facts, biographical references, relevant aspects of performance and reception as well as compositional and aesthetic questions are comprehensively integrated into the analysis of the work. A special feature of the analysis process is the model-like "middle ground reconstruction", which can serve as an exemplary and comprehensive orientation aid in the process of understanding complex works.
