| The Compositional Styles of John Lennon and Paul McCartney Presented with Special Regard to Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane The English pop formation “The Beatles” may justly be counted among the most influential musical forces of the 20th century. The amount of publications on the group, their music and reception history has grown to an immeasurable number, although it contains relatively few genuinely musicological works. This work examines the symbiotic cooperation and ambitious competition of the two compositional leaders of the band, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, providing a detailed insight into the process of the artists’ working and maturing. By means of classical musical analysis applied to selected songs, the compositional characteristics and individual styles of the songwriter duo will be determined and contrasted, revealing new and unexpected perspectives for the deeper understanding of Beatles songs in their entire complexity. |
